Social Learning
Ruskin College, Oxford

This project transformed dilapidated Listed buildings into modern teaching and learning facilities through refurbishment and the addition of a new Academic Building. Working closely with the College Principal, Phyllida, as project Partner for Penoyre & Prasad LLP, developed the strategy for the site, locating the new building adjacent to existing Listed buildings to connect at all levels and share a lift. She also led a bold approach; removing later inferior additions and restoring other areas, supported by the Local Authority and in consultation with local interest groups.

The finished spaces have a welcoming feel - The café and circulation spaces around a central atrium enable social learning to happen everywhere in the building. The building operates in different energy saving modes, recycling heat in winter and allowing free ventilation in summer. It meets Oxford City Council’s 20% Renewable Energy targets and was designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent.
