Norwich Town House, Garden Extension

The clients were looking for an innovative transformation of the living areas at the back of their terraced house, a place to entertain and enjoy a more intimate relationship with their garden. We designed a screen wall facing the garden with full width, double sliding windows and a long douglas fir roof light that drops honeyed light from above, even on a cloudy day. The garden is replenished by planting a small meadow on the flat roof of the extension, now colonised by indigenous, wind borne flora and fauna, providing a great view from the first floor bathroom. Energy costs were reduced with a high efficiency boiler, under-floor water heating and high performance double glazing.

The space is also home to an idiosyncratic art collection. The design provides not picture rails but sufficient sockets for the clients’ collection of over twenty working telephones to ring simultaneously whenever there is an incoming call.
