International Institute for Environment and Development
Shortlisted for the British Council for Offices Award 2012

The design for this research organisation met the challenge of creating a single shared environment over the seven floors of a leased building in Grays Inn Road. The move to open plan workspace was part of a change management process that enabled more collaborative working between four distinct research groups. It also created a welcoming environment with a strong identity that matched IIED’s graphic identity. 'Visiting staff and international research partners are now also welcomed and can ‘touch down’ for anything between a few hours and a few months.

The bonus is that IIED has the newfound flexibility to grow in the future without the need to lease more space. A strategy which has increased occupancy rates from their previous 50%. The auditorium has also provided a commercial opportunity when made available for hire.

A strong architectural language features spruce ply and dark formica with acoustic ceiling panels. A pragmatic environmental strategy with exposed soffits and night cooling creates the lowest carbon use for the budget.
